U.S. stocks surge following midterm elections, oil plunge
U.S. stocks rallied sharply on Wednesday as investors digested the outcome of the U.S. midterm elections.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1,569.40 points, or 3.03 percent, to 53,356.12. The S&P 500 added 119.70 points, or 1.58 percent, to 7,688.62. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 364.50 points, or 1.44 percent, to 25,736.51.
Vance blames Iran war for Republican losses in midterm elections
U.S. Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday that the war against Iran was the reason Republicans lost in the midterm elections.
"The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night," he wrote in a post on X.
His remarks came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump told The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Tuesday night that the war in Iran was partially to blame for widespread Republican losses in the midterm elections. Trump, however, said that he did not regret launching the war earlier this year.
"Iran was a piece of it," he said in a phone interview with the WSJ when asked whether the war contributed to Republicans' poor performance in the election.
He added that rising oil prices, rather than the war itself, were the biggest political liability.
EU hosts talks on Ukraine's post-war reconstruction
The European Commission hosted talks Wednesday on Ukraine's post-war economic development and instruments to support its reconstruction, according to a Commission statement.
Representatives of the European Union (EU), Ukraine, Germany, France, Britain, the United States, NATO and the World Bank participated in the discussions.
The talks followed recent meetings in Miami and built on a prosperity framework developed earlier this year with Ukraine and the U.S., the statement said.
Chief of Spain's railway management resigns following deadly train crash
