China's Cheng takes judo bronze at Dakar Youth Olympics
DAKAR, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese judoka Cheng Yue claimed bronze in the women's 78kg category at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Diamniadio, Senegal, on Tuesday, after her Cuban opponent Kayla Pita Zorrilla withdrew from the bronze-medal contest due to injury.
Cheng entered the repechage after losing her opening bout to Tatiana Exauce Itoua of the Republic of the Congo. She then defeated Mexico's Ariadna Yarey Chavez Medina and Itoua in their second encounter to win her repechage bracket and qualify for the bronze-medal contest.
Zorrilla, who had been injured in the semifinals, did not take to the mat for the bronze-medal bout, handing Cheng the medal.
"It was my first time competing abroad," Cheng said. "After losing the first match, I quickly adjusted my mindset and, under my coach's guidance, changed my tactics and won the next two matches."
Brazil's Clarisse Vallim took gold after defeating Russia's Anastasiia Dobrovolskaia in the final.
